Neda River

The Neda River is one of the most impressive natural wonders of the Peloponnese and the only river in Greece with a female name. It is located on the borders of the prefectures of Ilia and Messinia and is a magical destination for lovers of nature, adventure and mythology.

Natural Beauty
The Neda originates from the western slopes of Mount Lycaon, near the village of Petra in Arcadia, and crosses an impressive gorge approximately 32 kilometers long, before ending in the Kyparissia Gulf. The river’s course is full of waterfalls, caves, natural lakes and lush green gorges. Among the most famous waterfalls are those near the village of Platania, which form small natural pools with crystal clear waters, ideal for diving.

Activities
The area is ideal for:

  • Hiking along the canyon
  • Canyoning and cave adventures
  • Diving in waterfalls and natural ponds
  • Photography due to the magnificent natural beauty
  • The route through the canyon can take 4-5 hours, depending on the route and the stops for exploration.

Mythology
Neda was worshipped in ancient times as a nymph, one of the deities of the waters. According to legend, Neda was the one who took on the task of hiding and raising Zeus to protect him from his father, Cronus. The river was named in her honor.
