The Acropolis of Ancient Samia is one of the most important archaeological sites in the western Peloponnese and is located on the Elliniko hill, near the present-day village of Kato Samiko in Ilia. The area was of strategic importance since antiquity, as it controlled the passage from Ilia to Messinia and was located at a junction near the Caiaphas Lagoon and the Kyparissia Gulf.
Historical Significance
The acropolis is the main fortified site of Ancient Samia, a city identified with the “Samia” mentioned by Strabo and other ancient writers. Inhabitation on the Elliniko hill seems to date back to Geometric times, while the acropolis acquired fortifications during the Classical period (5th–4th centuries BC).
The walls of the acropolis, constructed with polygonal and trapezoidal masonry, are preserved in fairly good condition and surround the highest point of the hill. From the top, an excellent view of the sea and the wider area of Kaiafas is offered.
Architectural Elements
The wall is approximately 600 meters long and is reinforced with towers.
Inside the acropolis, remains of residences and possible public buildings have been identified.
There are indications of the existence of a sanctuary, perhaps dedicated to Poseidon or other local deities, associated with the sea and the source of Lake Kaiafas.
Landscape & Tour
The acropolis is accessed via a path that starts from the village of Kato Samiko. The route is short and pleasant, while the top of the hill offers a unique view of the pine forest of the area, the Kaiafas lagoon, the beaches of the Kyparissia Gulf and the Ionian Sea.
A visit to the acropolis is ideally combined with:
- A tour of the archaeological site of Kleidi (prehistoric acropolis)
- A walk in the Kaiafas lagoon
- A swim at the beaches of Kakovatos and Zacharo
The Acropolis of Ancient Samia is not only a place of historical memory, but also a natural observatory, full of energy and mystery. The connection of the place with mythology, the sea and the ancient civilization of Elis makes its visit an experience that touches the mind and soul.
