Kastrospilia (Sassalotrypa) is an impressive natural and archaeological monument located in Ilia, near the village of Kakovatos. It is a cave-fortress that combines wild natural beauty with traces of human presence from antiquity to modern times.
Landscape & Location
Kastrospilia, also known as Sassalotrypa by the locals, is nestled within steep cliffs in the Samiko area. Access is via a path through vegetation and pine forest, and its location offers panoramic views of the Kyparissiakos Gulf, the surrounding villages and the Kaiafas Lagoon.
Natural Castle
The cave functioned as a natural fortress — hence the name Kastrospilia. Steep cliffs and narrow entrances made the spot almost impregnable, making it the ideal refuge during times of war or raids. It was probably used since antiquity and during the Turkish occupation or even the Revolution.
Inside the cave there are traces of masonry and old structures, which indicate that it may have once been used as a residence or observatory.
